In this
listening task, you will listen to six recorded extracts (e.g., team briefings,
handovers, or health professional-patient conversations) and you will answer
one multiple-choice for each extract. Each short workplace extract takes about
one minute to complete. This listening task assesses your ability to identify
the main idea, supporting details and the purpose of the short extracts from
the healthcare setting.
OET Test-taking Tips for Listening Part B
Most test
takers enrolled in an OET online course program
find the short workplace extract task as the most challenging part of the
listening test. To help you overcome this and ace the listening test, read and
follow these OET Test-Taking Tips for Listening Part B – Short Workplace Extracts:
• Write down essential points
While
listening, list down all the important information, supporting details and
critical points in each short extract. Doing this will help you understand the
main topic of each short workplace extract in this listening task. During your OET online review classes, seek for various tips and
strategies that can help boost your note-taking skills.
• Read the questions
Skim the
question as you listen to the audio recording. Look for keywords or key phrases
to help you understand what is being asked in each question. For test takers
enrolled in an OET online course program,
practice skimming various question types to develop your OET listening
preparation.
• Manage your time wisely
Since you only
have 60 seconds to read and answer each short extract, maximize your time
listening to the audio recording and analyzing the questions. For students
attending OET online review classes, spend 45
seconds analyzing each short extract and the question. Use the remaining 15
seconds to evaluate the answer options and mark your response.
• Analyze the answer options
In this
listening task, each question consists of three answer options, and you have to
select one as your answer. Consult your notes containing all the information in
the short extracts and the keywords in the question when choosing your answer.
If you still can’t identify the answer, make an educated guess. Eliminate
answer options that are obviously incorrect.
You will have
two minutes at the end of the listening sub-test to check your answers for all
three parts of the test. Use this time to evaluate your responses carefully.
