English 101: Reciprocal Pronouns

Moreover, reciprocal pronouns help writers avoid repetition within sentences. There are two types of reciprocal pronouns: each other and one another. Both of them allow you to make sentences simpler and can be used when you need to express the same general idea more than once.  

When using reciprocal pronouns in possessive form, the noun that follows these phrases is usually in plural form. Check these examples:  

• Each other  
This reciprocal pronoun is used when talking about the relationship between two subjects that shows bidirectional action.

Examples:

- John and Joy were talking to each other in the park. 
- Both teams played well against each other.

• One another 
This reciprocal pronoun is used when mentioning two or more subjects and when referring to a general idea in a sentence.

Examples:

- We all need to learn how to be good to one another. 
- The gangsters were fighting one another.

Reciprocal pronouns in possessive forms
