Do you get a grade A in the OET speaking sub-test? Consider the dos and don’ts below when you take the exam.
OET Review Center Baguio Tips: What You Should Do During the Exam
Did you know that you should be aware of the sub-test’s scoring criteria before taking it? Knowing how you are being graded enhances your performance. For the speaking sub-test, know that you are scored based on your intelligibility, fluency, overall communicative effectiveness, and resources of grammar and expression.
Read on to learn about what else you should do to get a high score.
• Keep the discussion going. Since you take the role of the healthcare professional in all the role-plays, it’s your job to keep the conversation going. Avoid awkward silences. Ask your patient or client questions about their health. Clarify the things on the card you get at the beginning of the role-play. Remember that you are in control of the consultation.
• Listen. Keep in mind that the exam tests both your speaking and listening skills. So, don’t rely solely on the information provided on the data card. Pay attention to what your patient is saying. Analyze their responses and consider the data card before responding.
• Jot down notes. Keep track of all the things your patient tells you by writing them on the data card. You can consult your notes anytime during the role-play. This’ll make it easier for you to cite previously mentioned information accurately.
• Mind the time limit. Make sure you finish each role-play within the five-minute mark. This’ll reflect your ability to direct and maximize conversations. If you exceed the time limit, the interlocutor will cut the role-play short and move on to the next one.

Did you know that jumping straight to your analyses of the data cards is not the best way to start the role-plays? Read on to find out what else to avoid when you take the speaking sub-test.
• Wait for the interlocutor to start the role-play. Keep in mind that you take the role of the healthcare professional in all the role-plays. This means it’s up to you to begin and end the consultation. If the interlocutor initiates the role-plays, expect that you won’t get a perfect grade in the OET speaking sub-test.
• Avoid eye contact. It’s worrying and unprofessional to let your eyes wander during healthcare consultations. Worrying because it shows that you are not confident in your abilities as a medical professional; and, unprofessional because it shows that you aren’t paying close attention to your patient. So, maintain eye contact with the interlocutor.
• Improvise. If you want to get a grade A in the OET speaking sub-test, you can’t tackle the role-plays without a plan. Think about how you want to conduct the consultation. Organize the information in the data card and your thoughts and analyses about them into a structured discussion—one with a clear intro, body, and conclusion.
• Ignore your patient’s behavior. Consider how your patient is responding. If they are agitated, be patient and respond calmly. If they are nervous, offer reassurances to relax or placate them. Avoid interrupting them while they are speaking.
