Researchers
have found that using simple reading strategies is the key in developing a
student’s reading comprehension. However, some test takers find it hard to look
for different comprehension techniques that can help boost their reading skills
and ace the Occupational English Test (OET). For nurses
and other medical practitioners, below are three simple tips on how to
ace the reading sub-test:
1. Use
skimming as a speed reading technique
Speed reading
is the best way to absorb all the information from longer texts and articles
quickly. One of the most effective speed reading techniques that most test
takers use in their OET exam preparation is
skimming.
Skimming is
taking the most important information from a text without reading all its
sentences and paragraphs. When you skim, focus only on the essential ideas
including the headings and subheadings, bold or italicize words and phrases,
and names or dates, and skip over the insignificant, marginal, and secondary
information in the text.
Once you master
how to skim, it will be easier for you to get the gist of longer texts or
reading passages so you can have more time answering various questions in the
OET reading test.
2. Enhance
your vocabulary by reading various texts
Vocabulary
plays a crucial role in honing your reading comprehension. If you don’t understand
a specific word in a sentence, it will be difficult for you to understand the
overall idea of the text.
Honing your
vocabulary is practically an important aspect in developing your comprehension
so you can get a high score in the Occupational English
Test (OET). For nurses and other test takers, did you know that reading
various texts is the best vocabulary enhancement strategy?
Reading
different kinds of texts (Expository, Descriptive, Persuasive, Narrative, etc.)
gives you the opportunity to learn many unfamiliar words and how they are used
in a sentence. If you want to level up your OET exam
preparation, seek for various types of texts and read them one at a
time.
3. Understand
the question types in the reading test
The reading
test consists of three sections with various question types. This means you
need to understand all the question types in each reading section so you can
answer them properly. The following is a list of OET reading sections with
their question types:
Part
A: Expeditious Reading Task Matching Types, Sentence
Completion, and Short Answer Questions
Parts
B and C: Careful Reading Tasks Multiple-choice questions
