What Is the Subjunctive Mood?
Verbs are in
the subjunctive mood when they express a wish or suggestion, a doubtful
condition or an imaginary situation in a sentence. They are often found in a
clause beginning with the word “if” or a clause with any of the following verbs:

determine
·
insist
·
move
·
order
·
pray
·
prefer
·
recommend
·
regret
·
request
·
require
·
ruggest
·
wish

• The
subjunctive form of a verb is in the plural form. Check these examples:
The
manager will demand that he leave
the hospital premises today.
She
recommended that each driver report
his daily activity.
• The
subjunctive form of the verb “to be” is be
in the present tense and were in
the past tense. Here are some examples:
The board orders that the
motion be passed immediately.
If I were a cat, I would lie on the floor all day.
• The
subjunctive mood is used to explain conditions that are contrary to the fact. Read
the samples below:
If I were you, I would run as fast as I can.
If I were the President, I would listen to the public’s suggestions.
• The
subjunctive mood is used to explore hypotheticals. Look at the following examples:
If I were to solve that puzzle, I would begin with the smaller pieces.
If I were to compose a song, I would write songs about the present
issues.
• The
subjunctive mood is used to express wishes. Examine the sample sentences:
I wish I were there to have a drink with you.
Joy wishes that she were taller than her brother.
• The
subjunctive mood is used to tell commands or demands. Below are some sample
sentences:
The teacher insisted that
Brian withdraw his candidacy for the
student council.
The Mayor demanded that
his secretary sign the papers.
• The
subjunctive mood is used to make suggestions or recommendations. Here are some
examples:
I suggested that he implement a budget in December.
We asked that he listen carefully to the instructions
before starting the project.
